Obi Wan Kenobi Killed Luke’s Aunt and Uncle

And I Will Die On This Hill

I have had a theory for years and I am sticking with it. You can argue with me. You can yell at your screen. You can quote novels and canon and footnotes. But I know I am right. Even though we are talking about fiction.

**Obi-Wan Kenobi killed Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.

I did not always think this way.

I saw Star Wars in the theater just days after it was released. Like every other kid in the seventies I was instantly hooked. Spaceships. Lasers. Desert planets. Robots with personalities. It rewired my brain in the best possible way.

As an adult I am still hooked. Even though the franchise is now packed with side stories and characters that feel like they were created during a lunch meeting. But there is one fact inside this galaxy far far away that I will always fight you on.

So let me walk you through it.

Step One

R2 D2 Was There For Everything

R2-D2 was there from the very beginning. Yes his survival during the escape from Naboo was dumb luck. But dumb luck counts. He survived and became property slash companion to the most important people in the galaxy.

He was used. He was abused. And he never said a word that we could understand. Those beeps could have been nonstop profanity for all we know.

R2 watched the Republic rule. Then collapse. From the front row.

He watched Anakin Skywalker fall to the dark side. He watched twins be hidden. He watched Yoda and Kenobi disappear into exile. He watched the Rebellion slowly form and grow.

R2 kept all of that data. Every scream. Every betrayal. Every secret.

And let us not forget that he spent serious time with Yoda in the Jedi Temple and on missions. You do not need to be best friends to know someone. I have spent enough time in my kitchen to know way too much about my blender. R2 knew Yoda.

Which means Yoda knew R2.

Step Two

Yoda Had Backup

R2 was not the only living witness.

Yoda also knew Chewbacca. They fought together on Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars and more importantly during Order Sixty Six. Chewbacca helped Yoda escape. That kind of thing creates a bond. You do not forget the guy who saves your life while the galaxy is burning.

So now we have R2 and Chewbacca. Two characters who saw everything. Two characters who lived. Two characters who stayed close to the long game.

Step Three

Fast Forward To Zero BBY

We are on Tatooine.

R2 ends up there. Coincidence. Sure.

Except he knows Kenobi is there. And he knows Luke is there.

He also knows Kenobi’s last words.
“But we must persevere. And in time a new hope will emerge.”

R2 knew they were waiting. He knew this was the moment.

Luke buys the droids. That is how the Force works. Fine.

But now comes the first deception.

R2 runs away.

We see him slowly wandering through a canyon. Luke chases him. Gets knocked out. And suddenly Kenobi appears.

Convenient.

Unless it was planned. Let’s say…

R2 leaves and immediately finds Kenobi. Kenobi knows the time has come. The Force is telling him the waiting is over. But Luke needs motivation. Real motivation. Not just adventure. Not just curiosity.

Kenobi needs Luke angry. Broken. Ready.

Step Four

You Remove The Anchor

Luke will never leave Tatooine if he has a reason to stay.

So you remove the reason.

Owen and Beru die. Their bodies burned. Their home destroyed.

And Kenobi gently nudges Luke toward the explanation. Stormtroopers. Too accurate for sand people.

Have you ever watched a Stormtrooper shoot a blaster.

Also ask yourself this. When do we ever see Stormtroopers burning civilians like that. It feels oddly specific. Almost ceremonial.

Kenobi does not need Luke to know the truth. He just needs Luke to leave.

And Luke does.

Step Five

Mos Eisley Was Not A Coincidence

They head to Mos Eisley Cantina to find a pilot. That is a strange place to casually locate transportation unless you already know who will be there.

Kenobi has been communicating with Yoda. Yoda makes sure Chewbacca is there. And Chewbacca makes sure his pilot friend Han Solo is there. There was no worse place for Han to be at that time as Jabba had a price on his head. So for him to be there, Chewy probably had a hairy hand in that.

Watch that scene again.

One of the first things we see is Kenobi quietly talking to Chewbacca.

In my head the conversation goes something like this.

Great job Chewy. We did it. Now let us get these kids out of here and burn the Empire down.

The Long Game

This was planned. From day one.

They waited nearly twenty years. They protected Luke. They watched him. And when the time was right they flipped the switch.

R2 knew. Yoda knew. Chewbacca knew. Kenobi did what he believed was necessary.

Was it cruel. Yes.

Was it effective. Also yes.

Luke Skywalker became exactly what they needed him to be.

You think I am wrong.
